Role Definition

  • This most basic and effective way to achieve high performance is to describe expectations and results to be achieved. Yet, often it is overlooked!
  • A role definition should describe what is expected. Too often it is assumed that people know.
  • Effective role definition focuses on the results or what is to be achieved as well as broad responsibilities about how to achieve those results.
  • The results should include the entire role, not just what separates this role from other roles.
  • Define roles with an eye toward where the organization wants to go.

  • Understand the organization’s vision, strategy and culture.
  • Design the organizational structure via meetings with executives.
  • Develop role definitions for key roles based on dialogue with executives and incumbents.
